Sundance Photographic Workshop

Dynamic Portraits: Studio and Location

August 23-27, 2007

John Running

Portraits are some combination of design, technique and intuition. This workshop will explore the art of the photographic portrait beginning with an historical overview of portrait painting and photography. We will start in the early renaissance and will conclude by looking at contemporary work as well as work of our own.

The Workshop will be held in both a studio setting at Sundance and on location in nearby towns. In the studio, I will demonstrate simple but effective lighting techniques using window light followed by demonstrations using studio light set- ups. There will be an opportunity for each participant to use these techniques to photograph a portrait model.

On location, I will demonstrate the techniques of location portraiture including choosing the right backgrounds, selecting where to position the subject and in addition, where one should stand to achieve the best angle. We will use reflectors or gobos to enhance or modify the light available. Participants will then have the opportunity to apply these techniques by photographing local models.

Besides talking about the craft of portraiture, including lighting, composition and design, we will also discuss the most important aspect of the photographic portrait - the ability to relate to your subject in order to achieve the synergy required to make a dynamic image.
