Sundance Photographic Workshop

Storytelling with Images

November 8-12 , 2007

Martha Rial

Documentary photography is a powerful tool for exploring social issues in today’s complicated world. Ever since W. Eugene Smith perfected the photo story for Life magazine, journalistic images in newspapers, magazines and now online have been educating viewers on why they should care about a variety of issues from poverty to discrimination.

Photographers participating in this workshop will learn how to go beyond the snapshot and look for moments that combine information with visual impact while documenting daily life in rural America. Other topics will include discussions on idea development, research techniques and cultivating sources. I will also emphasize the importance of the relationship between photojournalist and subject for more effective storytelling. Students will also be encouraged to ask questions about the role of ethics in photojournalism.

The main goal of your long weekend in Utah, will be to discover the power of your own personal vision.
